Learning is Lifelong

Jewish Education

At Temple Micah, we provide formal and informal learning opportunities for both school-aged children and adults seeking to further their understanding of Jewish principles, values, and decision-making.

Youth Education

Temple Micah offers several youth education opportunities, including formal classes, informal social and educational events throughout the year, and ways for teens to help younger students. Learn more about each program below.

Religious School for Kindergarten to 7th Grade Students

Temple Micah’s Religious School provides students from Kindergarten through 7th grade with educational experiences and opportunities to further their understanding of Jewish principles, values, decision-making based on these, and to celebrate Jewish literacy, art, and culture.

Bet Mitzvah for 6th and 7th Grade Students

Celebrating the transition from child to adult is a long-standing Jewish tradition. We recognize this special time and foster a space for this growth through our program built uniquely for Bet Mitzvah-aged students (typically 12 and 13 years old) and their families. We use the term “Bet Mitzvah” to be inclusive of all genders.

Special Youth and Family Programs

Whether your children are enrolled in Religious School or not, there are several opportunities for them to participate in Jewish communal activities at Temple Micah.

Teen Programs

The primary way post Bet Mitzvah teens stay involved with the Religious School is by working as a madrich (classroom assistant), as a Hebrew tutor, or as staff for special school and youth events. We also offer several teen learning events throughout the year.

K to 7th Grade
Regardless of age, each participant in our program understands that:

  • engaging with Judaism (its customs, history, language and wisdom) is filled with joy and meaning.
  • there is a place in our school for children who come from diverse backgrounds, identify as any gender, and who are neurodivergent.
  • all participants have an important role to play in the unfolding Jewish story.
  • Judaism may be accessed in many ways: through the intellect, the heart, the body, and the soul.
  • inspired by our Jewish heart, each person has valuable contributions to make to our community and the world community including gifts of prayer, music, dance, study, cooking, social justice advocacy, volunteer work, and living lives with integrity.

Regardless of age, each participant in our program is encouraged to

  • integrate Judaism’s traditions with openness towards creativity and transformation.
  • think about Judaism in a respectful, critical and creative manner which we believe is essential to establishing a meaningful and enduring spiritual life.
  • use the resources of our tradition to work with all of humanity to create a world that is caring, compassionate and just.

YES! We have a terrific Bet Mitzvah program. Most of the young people who celebrate this beautiful life-cycle event start coming to Religious School when they are young, however, we do have families who don’t join our community until their children are older. Learn more.

If you are interested in having a bet, bar, or bat mitzvah as an adult, or other questions, please reach out to Rabbi Mo.

Since our classes are held in Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, there are built-in security measures, such as a buzzer system and parents monitoring the doors during Religious School hours.

Chaya Silver, Youth and Education Director, leads our dynamic staff. Some of our staff members are professional teachers, while others are laypeople. They all have a love for Judaism and a passion for working with children. As your child’s safety is our priority, all staff members over 18 years old go through a background check each year.

Adult Education

You don’t have to be school-aged to be a student of Jewish learning. From Torah study and Mussar exploration to Anshei Mitzvah and Jewish conversion classes, Temple Micah has an adult education course for you.

Micah Boomers +/-

Are you part of the Baby Boomer generation? Rabbi Mo brings together Micah Boomers once a month for discussions on a wide range of topics pertaining to this age group. This is a social bunch so schmoozing and noshing are also highly encouraged. Boomers meets monthly, all are welcome! Check out our calendar for the next session.

The Shabbat Tisch

The recipe for this semi-monthly Torah study consists of bagels and coffee, a little singing to keep the spirit, a diverse and thoughtful community, and a bissel of schnapps to top it off. The result is a stimulating, provocative discussion of the weekly Torah portion. The Tisch usually meets after our Shabbat Morning service. All are welcome! Check out our calendar for the next Tisch.

Anshei Mitzvah

It’s never too late to become a B’nai Mitzvah. If you thought you missed your opportunity, think again. Our 18-month program culminates in an Anshei Mitzvah service and celebration for anyone who would like to complete this milestone event.

Mussar

We explore this Jewish practice of learning to live a meaningful and ethical life with individual soul curriculum as well as wisdom and spiritual exercises.

Kabbalat Panim (Conversion)

As a community we serve as a gateway to those who are curious about living a Jewish life.  Under the tutelage of Rabbi Mo, participants study, reflect, learn and take action to formally become a Jew.
